Keywords: medical education, training of service providers, sexual and reproductive health curriculum MEDICAL educators have a responsibility to train physicians and other health professionals in the core competencies needed to improve the sexual and reproductive health of their communities. One of the distinguishing features of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo in 1994, (1) and its five-year follow-up by a special session of the UN General Assembly in 1999 (ICPD + 5) (2) is that they moved beyond rhetoric to define reproductive health, including sexual health, in the context of primary health care and to provide countries with specific goals, objectives, and targets, in order to provide quality sexual and reproductive health information and services. These reflect an international consensus on what needs to be achieved, requiring a combination of programme initiatives, public health policies, legislation, educational capacity building and community-wide efforts. Until recently, little interest has been expressed by medical educators in integrating sexual and reproductive health in the medical curriculum. Significantly, no international group that is representative of medical educators or the medical profession attended either ICPD in 1994 or the 1999 Special Session of the UN General Assembly, with the exception of the Commonwealth Medical Association.

The most complete and authoritatie source of information on those who design, specify, place, repair and use concrete.
A periodical focusing on concrete, and the building and construction industries in general.
Admixtures: Water resisting - not proofing? I note that there are several articles relating to concrete in the ground in CONCRETE, February 2004. These articles contain claims and statements relating to concrete performance in resisting water penetration. These range from “Waterproofing. can be achieved. by using a water resisting admixture within the concrete.” to “admixtures may be used that provides waterproofing..of concrete” to “watertight concrete”. These article give the impression that concrete is, or can be, made waterproof or watertight with the addition of an admixture. These terms are considered in Concrete Society Technical Report 18 (second edition) A guide to the selection of admixtures for concrete and CIRIA reports 139 and 140 Water-resisting basements. Both documents indicate that concrete cannot be waterproof or watertight in the true meaning of the words since this implies impervious or absolute prevention of penetration by water in liquid and or gaseous form. The correct term that should be used is water-resisting, describing the ability to resist water. This depends on the concrete quality and the effect of any integral admixture. The main function of water-resisting admixtures is to reduce surface absorption and/or passage of water through the hardened concrete. Other benefits such as improved durability may also result from their addition. It is worth noting that BS 8007: 1987 Design of concrete structures for retaining aqueous liquids only requires a certain concrete grade, with limitations on cement content and water/cement ratio to give the necessary water-resisting performance. Water-resisting admixtures are not required. The weak points in any water-retaining or resisting concrete structure are seldom the concrete itself, but cracking and performance of construction and movement joints. These can be controlled with careful design and construction, thereby limiting and subsequent ingress or loss of water.

A periodical focusing on concrete, and the building and construction industries in general.
The Concrete Centre, launched in September 2003, has successfully raised the stakes in the marketing and promotion of concrete during its first year. The Concrete Centre was established as a result of a strategic review instigated by the major UK cement and concrete companies to examine how to serve more effectively those who design and construct in concrete. The Concrete Centre aims to provide an organisation that can advise clients, designers, engineers and contractors on the activities, products and services of the whole spectrum of the UK concrete sector. It does this by acting as both a reservoir and conduit of concrete knowledge and expertise. Funded by 15 cement and concrete organisations, The Concrete Centre works alongside the British Cement Association, the Concrete Society and the ready-mixed and precast concrete industries. The emphasis is on partnership and collaboration in order to ensure an integrated approach from the whole sector for the provision of technical support, research, education and training and information services. This allows designers and engineers to realise the full potential of concrete and, in so doing, improve their own effectiveness and profitability.

Provides news and information on health and social services in Canada.
The present study was conducted to evaluate the integrated nutrition education program developed at the University of Arizona (UA) College of Medicine (COM). The nutrition curriculum was initiated in 1993 and fully implemented in 1997. Less than 100 students were enrolled in each graduating class. Enrollment was on average 51% men, 67% white, and the mean age of the students was 24 yr. The curriculum did not comprise a single nutrition course but rather integrated nutrition content into required courses throughout the 4 yr of the undergraduate medical studies. To determine changes in total hours of nutrition content, the researchers performed an analysis in each course to identify the nutrition content before and after the development and implementation of the nutrition curriculum. Evaluation of the nutrition curriculum project entailed three primary outcomes. The first evaluation included an inventory of the nutrition topics included throughout the medical training before and after development of the integrated nutrition curriculum. The second evaluation technique measured applied skills in the area of nutrition with use of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). The third evaluation method used the postgraduation questionnaire for student evaluation of the curriculum nutrition content. The graduating classes of 1994 and 1995 were exposed to a minimal amount of the integrated nutrition curriculum, primarily during their clinical practice education. These graduating students were compared with the classes of 1997 and 1998 graduates, who received the nutrition curriculum as an integrated component of both their basic science training and their clinical practice training. At the start of the integrated nutrition curriculum, there were 35 hr of required nutrition instruction during the 4 yr of medical education. From 1993 to 1997, 75 hr of required nutrition instruction existed. By 1996, 37 of the essential 40 nutrition topics recommended as essential, and 20 additional topics were included in medical student instruction. Courses with the most significant increases in nutrition content included social and behavioral sciences, biochemistry, and preparation for clinical medicine.

Bullies! Dont you detest their hurtful attitude and taunting language? Dont you abhor how bullying makes the victims feel? Bullying has occurred throughout the generations and in all kinds of societies. Even animals can be said to bully one another - birds have a pecking order and wolf packs will shun individuals. Slavery can be considered the most egregious form of bullying, and even the corporate world includes bullying. Often, minorities and women are excluded from high-ranking positions. Some bosses bully subordinates; coworkers may bully associates to make themselves feel important. Although there are many facets of bullying, this article focuses on varying measures of dealing with bullies at the early childhood level. Dictionary.com defines a bully as “[a] person who is habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people.” The Gale Encyclopedia of Childhood and Adolescence (1998) identifies the bully as “[a]n aggressive child who repeatedly victimizes a less powerful child with physical and/or emotional abuse.” Olweus (1993) describes bullying as “exposure, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions (words, physical contact, making faces, gesturing, or intentional exclusion from a group) on the part of one or more other students” (p. 9). Trawick-Smith (2006) classifies bullying as “proactive aggression that has no clear goal and is often displaced and hostile in intent” (p. 313). Even the definition from what is considered the first modern American dictionary (Webster, 1828) uses explicit language in characterizing a bully as “[a] noisy, blustering overbearing fellow, more distinguished for insolence and empty menaces, than for courage, and disposed to provoke quarrels.” Bullying, in the context of children, generally involves one or more larger or older children subjugating a defenseless youngster who is incapable of protecting him/herself. Warner and Sower (2005) state that bullies often are reacting to a kind of bias or diversity issue when they beset others. The target frequently possesses a characteristic that is “different” and that provides a supposed rationale for the attack; for example, freckles or an unusual name can incite an assault. According to Hendrick (2003), bullying encompasses varying types of verbal behavior, such as mockery, derision, insults, and threats. This vocal harassment causes emotional distress and poignant anguish. Verbalized bullying is often accompanied by physical harm, which can range from mild contact to, in the most extreme cases, even death. The most accepted definition of bullying is the one offered by Dan Olweus, a recognized expert on the topic of bullying: “aggressive behavior that (a) is intended to cause harm or distress, (b) occurs repeatedly over time, and (c) occurs in an association in which there is an imbalance of power or strength” (Fleming Towey, 2002, p. 6).

Think comfort, flexibility, and appearance, and youre on the right track. When it comes to office furniture, few items are more important than a comfortable office chair. Studies have shown that the chairs used by office professionals affect both productivity and stress levels. But what makes an office chair ideal? Heres a look at the features to consider in selecting the perfect chair. “Look for a chair that is appropriate for the individual using the chair and for the tasks that person will be performing,” says Jen Scrivner, general manager of G2 Office Furniture Market in Phoenix. “If the person using the chair will be sitting for long periods of time, the chair should be highly adjustable. Highly adjustable chairs will comfortably accommodate a variety of sitting postures including reclining, leaning forward, and sitting upright.” Moreover, the worker should be able to adjust his chair easily. If the user has to adjust two knobs and six levers to get comfortable, chances are he wont use the adjustments at all or wont use them properly. In that case, the user wont be comfortable no matter how “ergonomic” the chair is.

WHY NAME CHANGE UPSET CHIROPRACTORS The Florida legislature voted to change the name of chiropractic to “chiropractic medicine” in the closing hours of its legislative session (SB2128). The initiative for the change was fostered by the Florida Chiropractic Association to standardize the term “chiropractic physician” in every Florida statute, and to change the name of the licensing agency from the Board of Chiropractic to the Board of Chiropractic Medicine. All of this was done without an advance notice, a public hearing, or a debate. The International Chiropractors Association is extremely upset with this turn of events. The debate that is sure to ensue resurrects the issues that have divided chiropractic for nearly a century. As strange as it may seem, those who object to chiropractors being labeled “physicians,” and their expansion into medical practice, often find allies among the Straights. To understand the reason why, one must be familiar with the basis for the long-standing rift between “straight” and “mixer” chiropractors. In 1895 Iowa magnetic healer Daniel Palmer proclaimed that he had discovered the single cause for all disease. This was alleged to be partially displaced vertebrae (ie, “subluxations”) that impinged upon the free flow of the metaphysical life force he dubbed the “Innate Intelligence.” In the textbook, The Neurodynamics of the Vertebral Subluxation (Chiropractic Publishers, 1973), Homewood describes Palmers biotheology: The founder of.chiropractic appreciated the working of Universal Intelligence (God); the function of Innate Intelligence (Soul, Spirit or Spark of Life) within each, which he recognized as a minute segment of Universal; and the fundamental causes of interference to the planned expression of that Innate Intelligence in the form of mental, chemical and/or mechanical stresses, which create the structural distortions that interfere with nerve supply. Palmer asserted that subluxations could be detected and corrected by hand. The name “chiropractic” literally means “done by hand” (chiros=hand+practos=practice). Thus, the essence of chiropractic is that it is a drugless, non-surgical practice.
The ACA conducted a veterinary chiropractic survey toward the end of 2000 to estimate the professions interest in veterinary chiropractic, gather information on available chiropractic veterinary education, and get a sense of related state legislation and statutes. Surveys were sent to 183 ACA delegates, alternate delegates, state associations, and chiropractic colleges. The overall response rate was 40.98 percent. Sixty-five percent of respondents said interest has grown over the past two to three years, based on an increase in the number of veterinary chiropractic programs advertised, and because several doctors were asked to adjust patients animals. Twenty-five percent of respondents, however, said interest was flat.
The American College of Chiropractic Orthopedists (ACCO) includes doctors of chiropractic who, after an extensive postgraduate program, specialize their practices in chiropractic orthopedics. They serve the general public as non-surgical specialists. They serve the chiropractic profession as orthopedic consultants, assisting their colleagues in substantiating diagnoses and recommendations for treatment. The ACCO was formed to promote chiropractic orthopedics to the general public, to the insurance industry, and to the legal profession. There are now practicing chiropractic orthopedists in Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, France, England, and Belgium. 1. To organize doctors of chiropractic who are interested in the practice of chiropractic orthopedics into postgraduate study classes under the auspices of accredited chiropractic graduate schools

Nowhere has the impact of the automobile and its industry been more dramatic than in the U.S. The industry basically defines our economy. Automobiles shape many of our social patterns, and life styles. And there is the emotional attachment to automobiles. We Americans love our cars. Many of us devote more square footage garaging cars than our ancestors used for an entire family. We lavish billions of dollars a year on these machines in car care products and after market accessories.Increasingly though, owners are becoming estranged with the electromechanical operation of a car. Many view the automobile less a series of systems such as lubrication, drive train, electrical and fuel and more as a single product - a car. In spite of our almost constant exposure to the automobile - beginning shortly after birth with a drive home from the hospital and ending with that final ride in the hearse - few of us really understand much about the beast that bears us. More and more Americans know less and less about how their car works. In the early days of automobiles, owners had to be closer to their contraptions. Breakdowns were much more frequent and repair shops much fewer and far between. One had to get out and fix it or walk.In a way its the success of the automobile as a product - its durability and reliability - that has reduced the need for owners to “work” on the car as much today. Not too long ago changing points and plugs every 3000 miles was normal. Now going 100,000 miles between tune-ups is becoming normal. What routine maintenance is needed, primarily oil changes, is done for us in 10 minutes at locations almost within sight of each other.

LAKE FOREST, Calif. — CooperVision Surgical, a division of CooperVision Inc., announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Gebauer Medizintechnik GmbH for worldwide distribution rights of the Epi-LASIK products produced by the German engineering and medical device firm. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The EpiVision(TM), distributed by CooperVision Surgical, is an innovative refractive surgery product used in a LASIK surgery advancement called Epi-LASIK. Epi-LASIK combines the most desirable features of todays popular refractive techniques — LASIK and PRK. It produces virtually instant visual results like LASIK but with the stable long-term visual outcomes of PRK. During the Epi-LASIK procedure, the top layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is separated into an intact sheet of viable tissue. This tissue is temporarily lifted away from the cornea so that a laser can be applied to reshape the corneal bed. Once this is completed, the epithelial sheet is returned to its natural position on the eye. Key attributes the EpiVision System brings to this new surgical procedure are accuracy and control. It precisely and safely separates the epithelium from the next layer of corneal tissue, Bowmans membrane. In traditional LASIK, a microkeratome cuts a permanent flap into the center layer of the cornea (stromal layer). By eliminating the cutting of stromal flaps, the EpiVision eliminates the No. 1 cause of LASIK complications. “Were pleased to provide the EpiVision to refractive surgeons,” said Dave Fancher, president, CooperVision Surgical. “The EpiVision is one example of the novel and advanced products we anticipate bringing to the surgical market.”

Among elementary and middle-school populations, girls play for an average of about 5.5 hours/week and boys average 13 hours/week. Playing games is not limited to adolescent boys. Recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that several companies are now designing video game consoles for preschoolers. Preschoolers aged two to five play an average of 28 minutes/day. The amount of time spent playing video games is increasing, but not at the expense of television viewing which has remained stable at about 24 hours/week. Similar to earlier studies about television, the data about childrens video game habits are correlated with risk factors for health and with poorer academic performance. When video game play is analyzed for violent content, additional risk factors are observed for aggressive behavior and desensitization to violence. Video games are natural teachers. Children find them highly motivating: by virtue of their interactive nature. children are actively engaged with them: they provide repeated practice: and they include rewards for skillful play. These facts make it likely that video games could have large effects, some of which are intended by game designers, and some of which may not be intended. Video games have been shown to teach children healthy skills for the self-care of asthma and diabetes, and have been successful at imparting the attitudes, skills, and behaviors that they were designed to teach. In a study with college students, playing a golf video game improved students actual control of force when putting, even though the video game gave no bodily feedback on actual putting movement or force. There have even been studies with adults showing that experience with video games is related to better surgical skills. Research also suggests that people can learn iconic, spatial, and visual attention skills from video games.

Curad, maker of adhesive bandages, in conjunction with the American Safety Health Institute (ASHI), surveyed 200 first aid trainers concerning the general publics knowledge and preparedness when it comes to first aid. “When faced with a first aid emergency–no matter how minor or severe–our members say the biggest mistake people make is that they panic,” indicates paramedic Ralph Shenefelt, general manager of ASHI. “By learning basic first aid and having the proper supplies to deal with minor first aid situations, the panic factor could be eased dramatically. “According to the survey, trainers report that only 10% of those who seek basic first aid training classes actually own a first aid kit prior to taking the class,” he reports. “It shows you that even people who realize basic training is important are not always prepared.” Shenefelt advises that, in order to stay calm and take care of a minor emergency, the two–knowledge and supplies–go hand in hand. Among the findings in the ASHI/ Curad survey are: The most-common first aid mistake. If they had to choose one, 32% say the number-one mistake made by the public is that they panic, even in minor first aid situations: 24% maintain that most people do not know what to do; 24% indicate that most people do not have the proper first aid supplies on hand; and 20% argue that people favor first aid myths over standard, proven first aid procedures. What the experts recommend in a first aid emergency. Besides learning first aid skills, 37% recommend keeping calm when confronted with a first aid emergency; 35% say keep the correct supplies on hand; and 27% suggest calling 911 if you arent sure what to do.
OTTAWA — Legal aid programs in Canada had fewer applicants and spent less money than the year before according to a report, Legal Aid in Canada: Resource and Caseload Statistics, 2002/03. The decline in cases and spending is not based on a reduction in the need for legal aid services, but more likely in the change in the types of cases covered by the legal aid plan or in the financial eligibility criteria for providing legal aid services. Legal aid plans received 814,000 applications for assistance in 2002/03, down 4% from the total for the previous year. The number of approved legal aid applications decreased for the second year in a row, falling 3% to 494,000. Cases involving civil matters accounted for more than half, or about 55% of direct legal aid expenditures. The remaining direct expenditures went towards criminal cases.
